Natural Factors Influence PV Efficiency — Steel Solar Mounting Made In China

The Effect of Natural Factors on System Efficiency


1. Temperature reduction


In my opinion, the most important natural factor affecting system efficiency is temperature. Temperature coefficient is a very important parameter of photovoltaic module. Generally, the temperature coefficient of crystalline silicon cells is - 0.35% - 0.45% / C, and that of amorphous silicon cells is - 0.2% / C. The temperature of photovoltaic modules is not equal to the ambient temperature. The following figure shows how the output power of the photovoltaic module varies with the temperature of the module.


Near 12 noon, the temperature of the photovoltaic module in the picture reaches about 60 degrees Celsius, and the output power of the photovoltaic module is only about 85%.


In addition to photovoltaic modules, when the temperature increases, the conversion efficiency of electrical equipment such as inverters will also decrease with the increase of temperature.


Temperature reduction can be estimated based on the temperature coefficient of photovoltaic modules and local temperature.

2. Availability of sunlight


The total radiation we get is the sum of direct radiation, scattered radiation and reflected radiation of various radiation intensities, but not all radiation can generate electricity. For example, the inverters need more than 50W/m2 irradiance to supply power to the grid, but the output power is very low when the irradiance is below 100W/m2.


Even in the sunny western region, although this part of the total radiation data, but not available solar radiation, can reach 2-3%.
